KINGSLEY - The Western Valley Conference held its conference volleyball tournament on Saturday, and the Galva-Holstein Lady Pirates, in the words of their veteran coach Scott Mitchell, "weren't very good in any aspect of the game today except serving." If it weren't for that, said Mitchell, "we would have really struggled."
Galva-Holstein did win two matches in Pool Play - defeating River Valley 21-15, 21-16, and Kingsley-Pierson 21-11, 21- 4, but the Lady Pirates fell to Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove in their third match, 17-2, 8-21.
Brooke Weise led G-H in kills for the day with 16, and Heidi Rollefson had 11; Brea Slaybaugh dished out 26 assists and Jamie Christensen had 15; Brooke Wiese had 22 successful digs; Rollefson, with eight and Nicole Boyle, with five, led the team in blocks; and Victoria Andresen, Brooke Wiese and Ashley Buell each had seven ace serves
A disappointed Coach Mitchell said, "Our communication and effort was not very good (today), and we are not going to be able to beat good teams without a better effort. Little things that we are not doing are hurting us."
The 15th-ranked Lady Pirates' season record now stands at 14-7. Their next matches are on Thursday in Dunlap, when they take on Boyer Valley and Charter Oak-Ute, starting at 5:30 p.m.
