Careage Management, LLC, of Sioux City, has announced plans to celebrate their 10 years of owning and operating Careage Hills in Cherokee.
Careage Management acquired what was then Hilltop Care Center on October 1, 1999, and the name was changed to Careage Hills in 2000.
In the past 10 years, many things have changed at Careage Hills. The facility has received an extensive cosmetic renovation, and in addition, in 2005, a 4,300 square foot addition was added to the north end of the facility. This addition allowed for more private rooms, a therapy room, a living room and some additional office space.
The most prominent change has been the transition to resident-centered care, focused primarily around the adoption of the Eden Alternative philosophy. Eden was founded by Dr. William Thomas of New York, who, as a practicing physician working with an elderly population, determined that there was a direct correlation between an individual's environment and their medical needs. He concluded that persons residing in nursing homes which allowed residents the freedom to choose, and that were lively in nature, translated not only into happier residents, but also healthier ones. Careage Hills began their Eden journey in 2000, and became an Eden-certified facility in 2008 - one of only nine in the state of Iowa.
Marilyn Peck, Careage Hills Administrator, says, "Before Careage Management took over, we were just a regular, 'run-of-the-mill' nursing home. When they took over and we started down the Eden path, things started changing quickly and so much for the better. It has been a fast, but great 10 years."
An Open House is planned for Sunday October 11, from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Careage Hills, 725 N. 2nd Street in Cherokee, to commemorate the 10-year anniversary. A lunch buffet will be offered, and the general public is welcome to attend.
