Sept. 29, 2009 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center of Cherokee following a brief stay. A funeral service was held on Monday, Oct. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein.
Burial was at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein. Visitation was held Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the arrangements.
Evelyn Anna Hannah (Jensen) Leonard was born to Herman and Martha (Schwenk) Jensen on a farm in Blaine Township, northeast of Ida Grove, Iowa on Jan. 2, 1921. She was baptized in 1921 by her grandfather, the Reverend Henry Schwenk and confirmed into the Christian faith in 1935. She attended country school and graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1938. She was a teacher at country schools in Blaine and Grant Township. Later, Evelyn was employed at the Ida County ASC Office, where she first met Ransom Leonard of Holstein.
Evelyn married Ransom on Nov. 10, 1946 at the Ida Grove St.
Paul Lutheran Church. They established a home on the family farm north of Holstein. To this union were born seven children: Yvonne, Sharleen, Janet,
Randall, Bradley, Dennis and Keith. Evelyn's life was devoted to her husband, her family and her Christian faith.
Evelyn and Ransom were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in
Holstein. Evelyn was active in many community affairs and was a member of the Good Samaritan Auxiliary, WELCA, the American Legion Auxiliary, Sarah Circle and other Bible studies. She served as a County Farm Bureau Women's Chairman. She belonged to the Douglas Homemakers and with Ransom, enjoyed card club with the same group of couples since 1955.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Evelyn dedicated herself to helping others. Writing letters to her growing family and friends, reading, gardening, embroidery, quilting, and playing hymns on the piano were among her favorite pastimes. Her homemade bread and pies were enjoyed by all.
In 2004 Evelyn purchased a small home in Holstein and moved to town. In August of 2007 she moved to Char Mac Assisted Living. Evelyn was welcomed to her heavenly home by her Savior on Sept. 29, 2009 at age 88.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Ransom; her parents and stepfather, Andrew Petersen; three brothers, Roland Jensen, Herman Jensen and Wayne Petersen; and grandson, Mason Leonard.
Evelyn is survived by three daughters and four sons, Yvonne and husband Sam Downs, Jr. of South Sioux City, Neb., Sharleen and husband Ken Harris of Whitefish Bay, Wis., Janet and husband Ed Enright of Garner, Randall and wife Lisa of Spencer, Bradley and wife Anna of Phoenix, Ariz., Dennis of Holstein, and Keith and wife FrancenČ of Holstein; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley and husband Robert Ruser of Ida Grove, and numerous relatives and friends.
