There will be an Open House held at the Lily of the Valley #5 one-room school located on the grounds of the Northwest Area Education Agency on the Iowa Highway 3 Bypass, Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Refreshments will be served including hot dogs, chips, bars, cookies and drinks. The public is invited to come and visit the building and view the updates that have been done with funds made available by the Cherokee County Legacy Foundation.
In May, an upgrade to the electrical system was completed and baseboard heaters were added to lengthen the season that the building can be used. This improved the safety, as well as comfort to all who use the facility.
A worn area in the floor was repaired with authentic floorboards. Visitors will no longer experience stepping on a soft unsafe floor. Two new entry doors were put in to replace the older drafty ones, along with new locks that provided for a more secure and sealed entry.
Insulation was blown into the ceiling to created added comfort when it is being used in the spring, summer, and fall. Plus the windows were caulked to prevent drafts and insects from coming into the building.
Many from the area have come to visit the school this year including all third grade classes form Cherokee and Aurelia in May. River Valley and a fourth grade class from MMC will be attending this month. The children have been able to experience first-hand what it was like going to a country school.
During their visit a complete day was condensed into a half-day session that included each subject area and recess, taught by a team of teachers, The children were given a bonnet or neckerchief to wear and take home, and the teachers were dressed in proper attire.
Several Red Hat groups and other groups in the community have visited this summer. The local group of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association sponsors the school with seven members comprising the teaching staff.
A reminder to all interested, that the school is open to any group that would like to visit simply by calling the Northwest AEA office at 225-2568, or Bonnie at 229-3569, and they can contact the staff to schedule a time for you to come. The school will be closed at the end of October until next April.
Everyone is invited to the Open House so come and see what a wonderful record of history you have at your back door.
