HWC sweeps Cherokee VB team

Defending state champs too much for WHS

The second-ranked Class 2A Hull Western Christian Wolfpack swept three Lakes Conference games from Cherokee Washington High by the scores of 25-11, 25-16, 25-10 here Tuesday night.

"We really struggled with our serve receiving and serving all night," said Cherokee coach Sherry Miller.

Emily Cook paced Cherokee's net play in hitting with a 17-18 effort and four kills. Cook also registered 4-7 blocks. Julie Miller was 7-10 hitting with three kills, followed by Bailey English 4-5 and three kills, Taylor Woods 2-3 with one kill, and Megan Hummel 2-3.

Lauren Husman led Cherokee in setting with a perfect 42-42 night, along with 13 assists. Husman was 5-7 serving. English and Hummel also served 2-3 each against the taller, quick-striking defending state champions.

Cherokee also dropped the JV match against the undefeated JV Wolfpack by game scores of 10-21, 9-21, 15-21.

Katie Sambrano was 9-10 serving for Cherokee with two aces, while Brooke Luetkeman was 6-8, Jackie Wilson 5-5, and Denise Freed 4-5 with an ace.

Luetkeman led the Washington High JV girls in setting with a 23-24 effort, while Sambrano was 5-5, and Freed 4-4.

Wilson paced Cherokee in hitting with an 8-11 effort and three kills, followed by Sambrano 7-7 and two kills, Shanon Shaefer 6-6, and Luetkeman 3-4 with two kills.
