In order to meet inspection guidelines in the wake of the I-35 bridge disaster last year in Minneapolis, Minn., states and counties across the USA have to meet certain bridge inspection requirements in order to be eligible for Federal Bridge funding.
One of these requirements is to have a bridge rated when inspected. As bridges deteriorate with time and usage, the carrying capacity of these structures change. This summer Cherokee County Engineer Dave Shanahan hired the firm of Calhoun and Burns to inspect and rate the bridges in the county. Several bridges that were not rated in the past are now rated and one is closed.
The bridges listed are:
Amherst Township, section 25 located between E Ave. and F Ave. on 520th Street is rated as 5 tons. This is the maximum load that can be carried for all vehicles.
Grand Meadow Township, section 133 located on 620th Street west of G Ave. is rated 20-32-35 tons. See the sign for the corresponding vehicle.
Liberty Township, section 94 located on L-48 south of 470th Street is rated Legal One Lane or 80,000 lbs. Maximum load for all vehicles.
Liberty Township, section 95 located between L Ave. and M Ave. on 470th Street is rated 10 tons. This is the maximum load for all vehicles.
Pilot Township, section 52, located on 550th Street west of N Ave. is rated 20-30-30 tons. See sign for the corresponding vehicle.
Rock Township, section 180 located on 560th Street west of J Ave. is rated for 10 tons. This is the maximum load that can be carried for all vehicles.
Silver Township, section 115 located on M Ave. just north of 630th Street is rated 20-32-32 ton. See sign for corresponding vehicle.
Tilden Township, section 186 located on 540th Street between B Ave. and C Ave. is rated 10 tons. This is the maximum load that can be carried by all vehicles.
Tilden Township, section 187 located 550th Street between B Ave. and C Ave. is rated at 6 tons.
Willow Township, section 35 on C-66 at intersection of J Ave. is rated as Legal One Lane or 80,000 lbs. Maximum load for all vehicles.
Willow Township, section 105 located on 600th Street west of L-40 is now closed.
Shanahan states, "These changes in rating and carrying capacities are for your safety when crossing any of these bridges or any previously rated bridges. I know that not being able to cross these bridges with heavy loads will cause extra mileage and delays when harvesting, hauling livestock or manure, but neither Cherokee County or the public can risk crossing bridges that are not safe for the loads." Shanahan also said, "Even if you just crossed these bridges, please do not cross these load reduced rated bridges with loads over the posted rating."
"I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause the residents and visitors to the county, but I would be remiss in my job to the County and the public if I did not provide the ratings and warn those who cross these structures of the danger of crossing with heavier loads than these bridges can handle" said Shanahan.
"I thank the public for their understanding and help in these matters" added Shanahan
