WITCC schedules Fall Community Education Classes

Eight intriguing Community Education classes through Western Iowa Tech Community College in Cherokee promise a full slate in interesting learning experiences for all ages this fall.

The popular Community Education classes fill up fast, so those interested should soon contact WITCC at 225-0238 to register. Following is an explanation of the classes, the schedules, fees, registration deadlines, and instructors, where applicable.

Fall Wine Tasting

The ever-popular Fall Wine Tasting class is back for all levels of wine connoisseurs. The evening will include wines from Glazer Distributing, Johnson Brothers Distributing and the Santa Maria Winery. All three product lines can be found at our local Hy-Vee Store. Sign up for this class and you will have the opportunity to sample new fall wines and traditional favorites. In addition, students will get to choose a bottle of wine to take home following the class. Also included in the class will be a light meal including pasta and Caesar salad. Presenters will discuss which wines best compliment this food choice. Those attending the class must be 21 years old. Please bring a valid driver's license or other proper identification.

One session: Saturday, October 17; 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Ladies' Night out--Holiday Entertaining at Home

Plan a night out with your friends and get those creative juices flowing for the holidays. Ladies, enjoy and taste holiday food trays from Hy-Vee fresh service departments. Get the first look at unique decorating ideas and gift-giving ideas, along with inspiring floral arranging tips. Remember that now is the time to start preparing your home holiday entertainment plans. Of course, gourmet food sampling will be available. Browse the many displays and register for door prizes. Sign up now to reserve your spot for this fun-filled evening.

Painting Adventures

Join local artist Steve Schroeder and have fun with painting. He will provide a basic introduction to watercolor painting the first evening. Students can branch off into areas of personal interest such as oil or acrylic the second evening. Come prepared to paint. Steve will answer any questions and get you started on your first project or your next masterpiece. Students are asked to provide a set of Crayola or Prang watercolor paints, a container for water, and a hair dryer. Students with other watercolors or acrylic paints may use those if desired. Paper and brushes can be purchased that evening if a student chooses.

Beginning Excel

Are you ready for a new computer application? Tim Stoneking is ready to guide you through the basics of Excel. You will learn how to create, edit, format and print Excel spreadsheets. If you desire to learn the basics of managing, editing and storing data--this class is for you. Tim will be prepared to answer your questions, so come prepared. This is a hands-on class with a computer for every student. Come ready to learn!

Two sessions: Wednesdays, November 4 and 11; 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Re-beading, Re-pair and Re-design

Now is your chance to re-do that piece of jewelry you just can't let go, even though you aren't wearing it for some reason. You might have inherited your great-aunt's vintage brooch or your mother-in-law's necklace. Work with instructor Dori Claycamp to turn these pieces of jewelry into something extra-ordinary. Students are invited to re-bead, re-pair or re-design a piece of jewelry. If you don't have jewelry to bring to class with you, Dori will have a project also planned for you to complete by the end of the evening. Gather up your friends and join us for a fun evening! Digital Photography

Doug Pierson, Master Photographer, of Pierson Photography, will be the instructor of this class for the beginning digital photographer. The timing of this class is perfect to prepare students for capturing the best holiday photos ever. The first session will be explaining settings and setup of each student's own camera and instruction on how to take digital photos. The second session will be spent looking at the pictures taken and giving constructive criticism of the photos and suggestions on how to improve quality. Class is limited to 15.

Two sessions: Mondays, November 9 and 16; 6-8 p.m.

Pine Needle Basketweaving

Baskets are everywhere! Now is your chance to make a basket that will fit just the purpose you have In mind. Join instructor Erica Berding and use long, green pine needles and raffia to create that one-of-a-kind basket. It is easy, fun and will keep you busy on those snowy days in our future. Once you get started, we guarantee you won't stop with just one. Register for a fun evening, and find out how many uses you will find for your new baskets! Class is limited to 10.

One session: Thursday, November 12; 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Fees: $5; additional materials fee of $5 payable to the instructor

Silver Clay Jewelry

Attend this class and use precious metal clay to create your very own sterling silver ring or pendant. Instructor Erica Berding will assist you in choosing your pattern, shaping the clay and adding different textures. She will then fire your piece of jewelry. Return the next week to brush and buff your personalized piece of jewelry into a beautiful silver luster. Your work of art will be ready for you to wear at holiday gatherings. Just think how fun it will be to let everyone know you are the artist of your own jewelry. Sign up now, class is limited to 10.
