Alta hands MMC football setback

ALTA - The Alta Cyclones jumped to a 14-0 lead at halftime and then withstood a fourth-quarter rally by Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn to pocket a 33-12 Class A District football win here Friday night.

Robbie Sauter rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Cyclones, including runs of four, four, and three yards, carrying the ball 19 times in the game for 88 yards. Ben Stevens rushed for an Alta TD on a three-yard scamper to start the scoring in the first period, and Garrett Van Houten rushed for a 20-yard TD in the fourth quarter. Stevens carried the ball 15 times for 51 yards, Van Jouten six times for 54 yards, and Jaden Holton four times for 40 yards.

MMC scored its two fourth-quarter TDs on a 66-yard pass from Zach Specht to Blake Erdman, and a two-yard run to paydirt by Jesse Kunzweiler.

The Eagles rushed 28 times for 98 yards, with Russ Godbersen leading the way with six carries for 43 yards, followed by Erdman five hauls for 35 yards, and Kunzweiler 12 carries for 31 yards.

MMC completed 17-32 passes for 173 yards, one TD, and three interceptions. Kunzweiler ws 14-26 passing for 98 yards, Specht 1-1 for 66 yards and a TD, John Hoefling 1-1 for nine yards, and Neal Bunt 1-4 and two picks. Alta QB Ryan Friedrich completed 3-9 passes for 55 yards.

Godbersen led the MMC defense with 13 tackles, while Ben Hueser and John Hoefling registered 10 each, Ethan Radtke had eight, Bunt seven, Specht six, and Nathan Zubrod five.

Schuyler Radke led Alta tacklers with eight, followed by Josh Kristensen six, and Dylan Suhr and Jalen Henningson five apiece.

MMC (0-7) hosts District foe River Valley (1-6) Friday in Marcus.
