Welp wins easily

PAULLINA - Monday was a nice day, weather-wise, making it a good day to accomplish something outside, so the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Cross Country team did just that, Competing in the South O'Brien Invitational Cross Country meet here, the Eagles turned in some very good performances. MMC was led, as usual, by junior Jay Welp, who was the individual first place winner with his time of 17:23, finishing about a minute ahead of the rest of the field. Jay is curentlyranked 7th in the state and he will compete with his teammates in the District Cross Country meet in Holstein at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The State meet will be held in Fort Dodge on Halloween day.

MMC sophomore Jacob Pearson finished 24th individually in the boys varsity race, finishing with a time of 20:36. In the boys' junior varsity race, Eagle sophomore Tyler Pearson finished sixth, with a time of 21:42, just ahead of senior teammate Tyrel Godberson, who turned in a time of 21:45.

The Lady Eagles were four runners short due to illness, so all of the MMC girls competed on the junior varsity level, where Kelsey Sears placed second with a time of 19:45. Alissa McDonald was fifth (21:43), Jeri Welp seventh (22:12); Christina Wilkens 10th (23:06) , Kelsey Brady 11th (23:41) and Melissa Tabke 12th , with a time of 27:11. Coach Ric Collins said, "The girls have worked all season to improve their times, and all can return next fall."

MMC has battled a numbers problem all spring. Coach Ric Collins said, "We were one or two runners short all season of having a good MC XC team - maybe even a state qualifying team. We will work this spring and summer to find them."
