BRUNSVILLE - The Spirit Lake Park cross country squads swept the boys and girls titles of the 2009 Lakes Conference Cross Country Meet hosted by Le Mars on the Brunsville Golf Course here Monday night.
The Indians won ther boy crown with 38 points, followed by Le Mars 52, Hull Western Christian 71, Spencer 75, Storm Lake 109, Emmetsburg 196, Cherokee 208.
In the girls competition, SLP totaled 46 points, followed by Estherville-LC 48, HWC 83, Le Mars 93, Spencer 126, Emmetsburg 161, Storm Lake 161. Cherokee did not field enough runners to register a team score.
Paul Yak of Storm Lake won the boys race in 16:33, and Alec Baldwin of SKP was second in 16:52. Brooke Egeland of E-LC won the girls title in 16:31, with Racheal Moore of Emmetsburg runner-up in a time of 16:33.
Kody Sump led the Cherokee boys to the finish line in a time of 20:32 for 36th place, followed by Austin Winchell 20:53 and 40th place, Jaden Lux 21:27 and 42nd, John Bieber 21:41 and 43rd, and Conner Ogren 27:27 and 47th.
Chyenne Mortenson paced the Cherokee girls in a time of 19:17 for 33rd, followed by Katy Hart 19:43 and 39th, Amanda Kohn 20:36 and 44th, and Amanda Lewis 25:59 and 52nd.
"The Brunsville course is always tough, but the kids performed well and ran much-improved times over what they had at the beginning of the year as this same course," said Cherokee coach Jolene Hultgren.
"With the Districts (Monday) at Sheldon, everyone's goal is to run their best time of the year and that is what they're working towards."
