Monday, October 26, 2009

WASHTA - Recently the fourth grade students at River Valley have had two very special guests in their classroom.

The first was Esther Weis from the Iowa State University Woodbury County Extension Office. She was visiting the fourth grade students to share with them a nutritious fruit smoothie. Weis visited the classroom on several occasionsteaching the students about goodnutrition, how to read food labels, and how to make healthy food choices.

The second guest was River Valley's own Superintendent, Julie De Stigter. She was taking part in the fourth grade Mystery Reader program. During the week leading up to De Stigter's visit, the students were given a clue about the reader and the students were to guess who it would be. However, with clues like, "I have driven a dump truck, I drive a school bus, and the Corvette is my favorite car," none of the students were able to guess the reader.

During De Stigter's visit she talked to the students about her job as Superintendent and how important reading is in her life. Another one of her clues was that she typically reads over 100 books in a year. She said because of that it was very difficult for her to pick just one book to read to the students. The book she decided on was "Oh The Places You'll Go," by Dr. Seuss.

All of the students enjoyed the visit and are very excited for the next Mystery Reader to visit their classroom.
