Cherokee area caregiver support group

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

One in four Iowans are caregivers and provide $2.1 billion dollars worth of care each year. Everyone has been affected by caregiving in one way or another.

You may be a current caregiver, a grandparent caring for a child under the age of 18, or a caregiver for someone that has passed away or placed in a long term care facility.

The next two meetings of the Cherokee Area Coffee & Conversation Support Group will be on the first Friday of the month. The dates are November 6 and Dec. 4 at Danny's Sport Spot, 1013 S. 2nd St.

The meetings start at noon. Please plan to purchase your lunch but enjoy a "free" dessert. Anyone who has helped a friend or loved one is welcome to attend.

The format of the meetings will be educational and will include suggestions to reduce stress, increase coping skills, group discussions and a time for sharing. Thanks to a grant awarded by "Target," a respite worker will be paid to stay with loved ones allowing caregivers to attend the meetings.

This program is free to the public and is a great opportunity to visit with other caregivers. This support group has been organized by Barb Dinelli, Caregiver Specialist at Siouxland Aging Services. If you have any questions you can contact Barb at 712-279-6900 ext 36 or visit our website at www.siouxlandaging.org.
