MMC's Welp 2nd at Boys District XC

SOS boys, G-H/S-C girls also qualify for State

HOLSTEIN - Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn junior Jay Welp ran another strong race at the Class 1A District Cross Country meet held here on Monday. The meet had been postponed from its original date of last Thursday due to weather conditions.

Welp finished second to another 11th grader, Manson Northwest Webster's Taylor Huseman. Huseman's winning time over the 5k course was 16:58.56, and Welp was close behind, in 17:07.10.

South O'Brien placed second in the team standings, scoring 82 points to champion Fort Dodge St. Edmond's 69, and the Wolverines had two runners in the top 10, with senior Cole Pleggunkuhle finishing 6th, with a time of 18:02.20 and junior Nate Stuve placing 8th with his time of 18:06.57. South O'Brien's Randall Nieman was 11th (18:26.73) and freshman Daniel Patterson finished 13th with his time of 18:29.90. The SOS team will run at the State meet.

Other MMC runners and their times were Jacob Pearson 20:39, Tyler Pearson 21:47, and Tyrel Godbersen 23:17.

Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland freshman Christian Egger finished 27th with a time of 19:19, his teammate Trevor Irwin was 36th in 19:25.12, and Josh Schwanz was 45th in 19:45.62. The Pirates placed ninth in the team standings with 207 points.

In the girls' 4k race, Algona Bishop Garrigan freshman Erin Reedy finished first with her time of 16:13.62, beating out second-place Rachel Moore of Emmetsburg by 16 seconds, as the top six finishers were all underclassmen.

Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland's strong team placed three runners in the Top 20, led by Jessie Mathes' 12th place finish (17:14.96). Ashley Drey finished 13th, in 17:25.45, and freshman Katie Boyle was 16th, with a time of 17:45.51. The Lady Pirates' Meg Kofmehl and Rachel Hunt placed 23rd and 26th, respectively.

The Lady Pirates finished second in the team standings, scoring 78 points as a team, as Fort Dodge St. Edmond won team honors with 61 points. Prairie Valley, Sioux Central and West Sioux took 3-4-5. The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn girls were 15th, scoring 371 team points.

MMC's leading runner was Kelsey Sears, who placed 43rd in 19:25.37. Other MMC girls running and their times were Anna Wilcox 21:22, Alissa McDermott 21:37, Jeri Welp 22:34, Christina Wilkens 24:21, and Kelsey Brady 24:23.

The all-class State Cross Country meet will be held in Fort Dodge on Saturday.
