MMC's Welp 7th ; South O'Brien boys 8th
FORT DODGE - Cool fall weather greeted runners as they competed in the 2009 State Cross Country Meet here on Saturday, and they responded with excellent showings.

Of particular note are the performances of several area athletes. Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn junior Jay Welp became his school's first-ever All-State performer by finishing in the Top 10 in the Class 1A race Saturday. The junior ran up front in the lead pack of 138 runners, and his time of 16:52 garnered him 7th place, as the number 2-8 runners all finished with times between 16:43 and 16:53.

MMC Coach Ric Collins said of Welp, " We're all very proud of Jay, and happy he reached his goals with all his hard work. Less than 30 minutes after the race, he was already planning for next season. He's that kind of athlete."
The 4th-place finisher, by the way, with a time of 16:45, was Taylor Huseman of Manson-Northwest Webster, the son of Aurelia natives Frank and Brenda (Cougill) Huseman.
The South O'Brien boys finished 8th in the Class 1A team standings, with a total of 214 points. Cole Peggenkuhle was the Wolverines' top finisher individually, coming in 27th with his time of 17:38, and he was joined by teammates Nate Struve,18:09; Daniel Patterson, 18:26; Randall Nieman, 18:36; Luke Hoger,19:27; Collin Schroeder, 20:46 and Daniel Haden, 21:55.
In the girls 1A competition, Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland scored 258 points as a team to finish 14th. Ashley Drey was GHSC's top finisher, coming in 65th with her time of 16:52 over the 4k course. Other GHSC runners and their times included Jessica Mathes, 17:00; Katie Boyle, 17:30; Meg Kofmehl, 17:38; Rachel Hunt, 17:47; Tami Bertrand, 18:35 and Sarah Forristal, 19:41.
There were no Chronicle Times coverage area runners in the Class 2A and 3A competition.
