FORT DODGE - The Storm Lake Girls' Swim Team completed the 2009 season on Saturday with a trip to the Regional Swim Meet in Fort Dodge. The team scored a total of 46 points in the meet, but posted six individual bests and one relay best during the meet.
The best finishes of the day were in the freestyle events, and the highest individual finish of the meet was by Cherokee senior Paige Stieneke in the 500-yard free, which she was swimming for only the second time this season. Paige was filling in due to the loss of the usual Storm swimmer in the event, Mary Mooney, who was out due to illness. Paige placed 13th in the event with a season best time of 6:37.8.
In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Lindsay Hall posted her best time of the season, 27.91, and took 14th place, followed closely by Stieneke at 28.32 in 16th place. Hall also placed well in the 100-yard free, where she finished 15th in a time of 1:03.2. In the same event, freshman Alex Larson posted her season best time of 1:08.2.
Other season-best times were posted by freshman Casey Larson in the 200-yard free in a time of 2:35.64, junior Liz Eller in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:40.97, and junior Madison Cerizo in the 100-yard breaststroke, in a time of 1:31.5.
The 200-yard free relay set a season-best mark when they finished in 1:58.5 with the team of Stieneke, senior Jenna Harms, sophomore Anna Wulfekuhler, and Hall. The other relay earning points for the team was the 400-yard free relay team of C. Larson, senior Rachel Anderson, Cerizo and A. Larson, who finished 9th in the race with a time of 4:55.37.
Other team members competing at the meet were Cherokee sophomore Brianna Fowler, and juniors Stacey Stark, Bobbi Jo Staton and Courtney Hewett.
Storm Lake Coach Jodi B. Mongan said, "It was really fun to watch two of the top teams in the state compete at this meet - Ames and Mason City - and to see many of our swimmers put in great performances at their last meet of this season.
"We are going to miss our seniors as we look forward to next year, but I am excited about the swimmers we will have coming back, and hope to build on the successes we had this season. We will celebrate those successes at our awards banquet this week as we get together one last time as a team."
