Library News

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

I suppose the logical thing to write about this week is what we are thankful for at the Cherokee Public Library. So I will give it a go.

First and most important, we are thankful for the patrons who encourage us and appreciate the library. The ones who don't get upset if we make a mistake on their record. The ones who donate new books while they are still "hot." The ones who don't complain that we're not open at dawn or until midnight. The ones who understand we can't have every book that's been written and don't mind paying an ILL fee once in awhile. The ones who take their turn on the computer and then get off the machine in a timely fashion so someone else can use it. The ones who vacate the building a few minutes before closing, making it easier to get staff out on time without paying extra wages. The ones who stay home when they're sick instead of sneezing and coughing all over us and our computers.

We are thankful for the Friends of the Library who despite their small size manage to hold a successful fundraiser each year enabling us to provide extras that aren't in the budget. This year's proceeds will go to new DVD racks and films.

We are thankful for people who take time to serve on the Library Board and the Cherokee Public Library Foundation Board. Also for a city staff who helps us out with minor repairs, advice and support and for local media that promotes our programs and provides free publicity.

We are thankful that the governor reinstated funding to the Enrich Iowa program after threatened cuts. We purchase a lot of materials, especially DVDs with that money. And the word from the State Library is the check is in the mail for this year.

We are thankful that the weather has stayed warm enough so we're not outside trying to clear ice off the sidewalk.

And last, I am personally thankful for the wonderful ladies I work with. Cooperation is the name of the game with the library staff and that trait is worth millions.

The library will close early at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and be closed Thanksgiving Day. We'll be back in business from 10 a.m. 5 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Happy Thanksgiving!
