AURELIA - The Aurelia girls' basketball team put up a somewhat surprising battle against a veteran Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn team in the Bulldogs' opening game of the season here on Tuesday. MMC held leads of 18-14, 32-24 and 52-36 at the quarter breaks, but the Bulldogs of Coach Aaron Ware chipped away at the margin in the final quarter, outscoring Coach Shane Williams' Eagles 24-12, to make it a 64-60 MMC victory at the end of the game.
Aurelia Coach Aaron Ware said the game was "a fun game to coach and watch. We played hard and wanted to really get a win to start off the season, but small things kept us from being able to accomplish that part of our goal."
Ware went on to say that "things started clicking in the second half and we put up a lot of points, (but) we just need to get into our offense earlier, reduce turnovers and have strong finish. I think we will have a great season and surprise a few teams."
The next three Bulldog games will also be home contests, and they'll be joined by the Bulldog boys for those doubleheaders, as they get their season underway. The newly-named Ridge View Raptors come to town on Monday November 30, followed by Northwest Conference opponents Sioux Central and Laurens-Marathon on Dec. 4 and 8, respectively. MMC (now 1-1) will travel to Remsen Union on Dec. 1 and Gehlen Catholic on Dec. 4, before returning home to take on Spalding Catholic on December 8.
