CORRECTIONVILLE - Both the girls and boys' River Valley basketball teams won Western Valley Conference games over West Monona here on Monday. The Wolverine girls led after each quarter in taking a close 49-44 victory. They were led in scoring by Brittany Shropshire, with 11 points, and Kari Ludvigson with 10. RV's record is now 2-1 for the season.
The RV boys jumped out to a 36-8 lead in the first quarter en route to an 84-66 win over the Spartans - the Wolvernes' first win of the young season. Austin Hansen continued his excellent early - season play with a 25 point, nine rebound, six steal effort, while Ryan Kettelson hit four 3-point baskets and scored 14 points. Sam Lundt added 12 points with six assists and Mark Peterson was also in double figures with 11 points. Andrew Volkert led RV in rebounding with 11 boards. Zak Gander had eight points and six boards and Blaine Cullen five points and five boards, as the Wolverines did their usual great job of getting everyone involved.
River Valley Coach Dean Norris felt his team "played a great first quarter, then sort of lost their intensity, particularly on the defensive end."
Norris did say, though, that he was pleased with the team's balanced scoring and the way they passed the basketball.
The River Valley were scheduled to hit the hardwood at home again on Tuesday night against Woodbury Central, but a winter storm postponed that game.
