Cherokee teen collides with semi

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

LE MARS - A Cherokee teenager received minor injuries after the car she was driving collided head-on with a semi-trailer early Saturday.

Brittani Cates, 18, was treated and released from Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

According to a press release from the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office, Cates was driving the wrong way in the southbound off - ramp at Exit 118 on U.S. Highway 75 near Le Mars at 5:15 a.m., when she collided head-on with a semi driven by Mitchel Wynja, 33, of Sheldon.

Witnesses told sheriff's investigators that Cates' 1998 Mercury Sable burst into flames after the collision, but a witness and Wynja put the fire out with fire extinguishers. Wynja was not injured, though the semi, registered to JT Trucking of Sheldon, sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage. Cates' vehicle was totalled.
