There was hardly any traffic on Cherokee's Main Street at noon Wednesday after raging winds blew dry, powdery snow around in frigid temperatures, causing area schools to cancel, businesses to close, and consumers to stay home.

The winter storm began late Monday with cold temps and powdery snow, and snow whipped by fierce winds Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning created blizzard conditions and snow drifts that shut down much of Iowa.

According to reports, the Cherokee area received 6-8 inches of snow.
