ALTA - The Aurelia Bulldog basketball teams made the short trip to Alta for a doubleheader on Friday and both of the young Aurelia teams returned home with lopsided losses.
In the girls game, Cyclone Coach Jeannie Henningsen's daughter Jordan tallied 32 points to lead Alta to a 78-32 win. She was not alone, though, as two of her teammates, Courtney VanHaaften (17) and Emily Grieme (12) also scored in double figures.
Aurelia was led in scoring by Audrey Winterhof, who had 11 points , and Shaina Thevenin, who tallied seven. Erin Laursen grabbed nine rebounds for Aurelia.
In the boys game, the Cyclones won easily over the inexperienced Bulldog squad, 83-38.
Bulldog Coach Grant Peckenschneider said, "Our young guys have got to be ready to play from the moment the ball is tipped. We did not play very good "help defense" against their quicker guys in the first half. We gave up dribble - drive penetration way too easily."
Coach Peck added that his young team did give a better effort in the second half of the game.
Freshman Austin Glawe led the 'Dogs with a solid "double double" effort, scoring 13 points and hauling in 15 boards, while Nick Hirschman, Colton Ballantyne and Jacob Howey scored eight, seven and five points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
The Aurelia teams host Storm Lake St. Mary's Friday night and travel to
Charter Oak-Ute Tuesday before breaking for the holidays.
