SERGEANT BLUFF - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Eagles and Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors were hooked up in a good War Eagle Conference girls' basketball game here on Friday, with SB-L leading 13-10 with a minute left in the first quarter. At that point, the Lady Eagles began to commit a series of unforced turnovers and went six minutes without a point while the Warriors tallied 19 unanswered points.
At half-time the score was 45-19, SB-L, and despite better fundamental play in the third quarter by the Lady Eagles, the deficit was 30 points heading into the final frame.
The Lady Eagles continued their good play, though, "playing basketball the way we are supposed to," in Coach Shane Williams' words, and managed to cut the deficit to 17 before a three-pointer at the buzzer gave SB-L a win 77-56 win.
Kayla Foresman broke out of a scoring slump and hit 10 of her 17 shots from the field to score 20 points and lead the MMC scoring. Three teammates also scored in double figures, with Erica Dreckman tallying 16 points, Jen Mittelstadt 13, and Ashley Schneider 10.
The Lady Eagles travel to Hinton on Friday and to Orange City Unity Christian Tuesday in more WEC action before the holiday break.
