HINTON - The talented Hinton Blackhawks led at all the breaks on the way to a 69-52 win over Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in boys basketball action here Friday night.
Hinton jumped out to a 20-15 lead after the first quarter, and led 40-33 at halftime, before taking a 49-38 lead into the final eight minutes when the Blackhawks outscored the Eagles 20-14 to win it going away.
Jay Welp paced MMC with 14 points, while John Hoefling added 12, and Will Hanson 11. Welp and Hoefling also led their team in rebounds with six apiece, and Hanson grabbed four.
Jason VanderKooi led Hinton with 17 points, followed by Seth Butler 12, and Josh Schreck 10.
MMC sank 20-56 field goals for 38 percent, and cashed in 10-20 free throws. Hinton made 25-57 shots for 44 percent, and netted 16-21 free throws.
"Our posts did a much better job of blocking out and rebounding," said MMC coach Pat Bird. "Our post players accounted for 31 of our 52 points. We were ice cold from outside, however, hitting only 2-19 from beyond the 3-point arc."
The Eagle squads take the holiday break now until Jan. 5 when they play at Remsen St. Mary's.
