AURELIA - The Aurelia High School basketball squads entertained the Storm Lake St. Mary's teams here on Friday in Northwest Conference action.
In the opener, the St. Mary's girls prevailed over their Bulldog counterparts by a score of
51-45. Aurelia Coach Aaron Ware said, "This game was a tough loss for us. We have had a stretch of games where we haven't put together a full game of basketball. We played hard against St. Mary's and climbed back steadily, but just couldn't
make the turn earlier in the game to give us the win."
Junior post player Meghan Glawe had 23 points and eight rebounds to pace the Bulldogs' effort, and Amber Loucks added 10 points to the team total. The Bulldogs only went to the free throw line five times in the game, converting just one.
St. Mary's was led by Jennifer Demig's 21 points and Madnon Lauen's 17.
In the boys' game, the winless Bulldogs took on the ranked St. Mary's club, and fell 65-33. Aurelia Coach Grant Peckenschneider said that St. Mary's "is a very solid club, and is absolutely worthy of a state ranking. My compliments to Coach Wilkening and his staff on great sportsmanship. They could have easily scored more, but showed great class during the game. St. Mary's has taken their share of losses in the past years, and they have worked hard and deserve the success they will have this season."
