ORANGE CITY - The 6th-rated Orange City Unity Christian boys jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter on the way to a convincing 79-48 War Eagle Conference victory over Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn here last week.
The Knights stormed to a 45-17 halftime lead and led 61-25 heading into the final eight minutes.
The Eagles sank 15-39 field goals for 38 percent, and the Knights meshed 33-51 baskets for torrid 65 percent, including a superb 10-15 effort from the three-point arc. MMC netted 7-18 threeballs.
The Eagles did win the free throw category with an 11-16 night, and the host Knights made 3-4.
Will Hanson led MMC's scoring with 17 points, and Neal Bunt added 10.
Austin Katje paced the Unity Christin club with 22 points, and Alex Davelaar scored 11.
"Unity Christian put on an impressive shooting display," said MMC coach Pat Bird. "They hit a remarkable 10-15 from the three-point line. We went man-to-man for a short time in the second quarter to try to temper their outside shooting, but their superior height at every position created very tough match-ups for us.
"Our guys battled hard the whole game, but they simply had too much firepower for us."
The MMC teams are in the holiday break and return to action Jan. 5 at Remsen St. Mary's.
