Snow emergency in effect in Cherokee

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Cherokee Mayor Mark Murphy has declared a snow emergency so that intersections may be cleared and streets widened.

No Parking on city streets is allowed during this snow emergency. Even though your street has been cleared, crews will be widening and clearing intersections for

the next several days. The NO PARKING BAN ON CITY STREETS will remain in effect until further notice.

*Motorists are asked to drive with extreme caution at our intersections. Until snow piles are removed from corners, sight visibility is extremely limited
*Citizens are asked to help their neighbors. If you are able, please offer snow blowing or shoveling assistance to your neighbors.
*Cherokee has nearly 300 fire hydrants in the City. In case of fire, access to these hydrants can be the difference between minor damage and total loss. Water Department employees will be out for the next several weeks clearing access to these hydrants. Citizen assistance in removing the snow around the hydrant near your property will be sincerely appreciated.
*Postal employees, utility meter readers, and newspaper carriers also need the help of citizens in clearing their walks to your mail box, doors, and a path to your utility meters. Clear paths to the mailbox, utility meters and doors and porches may be the best Christmas present one can give these individuals.
*Reminder that blowing or pushing snow into the city streets is prohibited. It not only is a safety issue for motorists, it also requires more tax dollars having to be spent re-clearing streets.
*Reminder that snowmobile usage is not allowed on city streets or property other than for travel to and from property rural areas. In addition, snowmobilers need to remember that they frequently cannot be seen by the motorist. Please be extremely cautious in crossing streets and roadways. Finally, snowmobilers are asked to respect private property of others.
*Thank you to all of our citizenry for the patience and cooperation extended to city crews during the Christmas blizzard of 2009. Thank you to city street crews, police, fire and utility personnel for their extraordinary work over the Christmas holidays.

It would be nice if you had the snow plowers clear alley ways when requested by a person who is on dialysis 3 times a week.My Dad has to travel to StormLake every Mon-Weds-Friday.

Thanks Tressa Love
