REMSEN - The host Remsen St. Mary's boys went on a 24-10 scoring run in the fourth quarter, including an 11-0 tear midway into the period to pocket a 68-57 War Eagle Conference basketball victory over Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn here last week.
The two teams battled back and forth throughout three quarters before the Hawks made their scoring run in the final eight minutes. MMC led 22-19 after a torrid first frame, and trailed 33-31 at halftime, before regaining the lead at 47-44 heading into the fateful final quarter.
Balanced scoring fueled the visiting Eagles, with Jay Welp scoring 13, Will Hanson 12, John Hoefling 12, and Jesse Kunzweiler eight.
Beau Pick led St. Mary's with 19 points, followed by Skyler Higging 15, Billy Steichen 13, and Tanner Kockler nine.
MMC sank 23-55 field goals for 42 percent, and the Hawks drained 26-49 for a sizzling 53 percent. The Eagles were 6-8 from the free throw line, and RSM was 12-22.
"The game see-sawed back and forth for three quarters," said MMC coach Pat Bird. "Midway through the final period Remsen went on an 11-0 run and that forced us into fouling for possession. We had a few opportunities to score after missed free throws, but were unable to convert on the offensive end.
"We did a better job or rebounding but we were still not able to shut down their husky post players."
No statistics were submitted for the MMC-St. Mary's girls game.
The MMC teams play at Akron-Westfield Tuesday night.
