Braves, Eagles vie at K-P meet

Cherokee, MMC each crown 2 champs

KINGLSEY - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Eagles snagged second place at Saturday's Kingsley-Pierson Wrestling Invitational, featuring two champions and three runners-up at the seven-team meet.

The Cherokee Braves also crowned two champions and three third-place finishers in the meet won by Hull Western Christian with 157 team points.

MMC was second with 144, followed by Alta 142.5, Lawton-Bronson 129, Westwood 109.5, Kingsley-Pierson 108, Cherokee 104.

MMC's Russ Godbersen captured the 152-pound title, along with being named Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament. Jacob Meehan also won first place for the Eagles in the 140-pound weight class.

MMC second-place finishers were Tyler Nielsen at 119, Tyler Pearson at 130, and Dillon Mugge at 215.

Cherokee champions were Zac Anderson at 145, and Patrick Loughlin at 160.

The Braves managed three third-place finishers in Rick Weaver at 130, Jack Letsche at 135, and Trevor Devitt at 215.

Godbersen received a bye, and then pinned Tyler VanderZwaag of HWC in :28, and pinned Sage Washburn of Westwood in 1:24 to win his title.

Meehan received a bye, and then pinned Chris Singleton of L-B in 1:28, and beat Matt Steffen of K-P 3-2 to win his title.

MMC runner-up Nielsen received a bye, beat Nathan Alafa of Alta 9-4, and then was pinned in 4:59 by Casey Seubert of L-B. Runner-up Pearson pinned Chris Schroeder of Westwood in :32, pinned Stetson Nelson of K-P in 1:27, and lost 3-2 to Chad Richardson of L-B.

Runner-up Mugge received a bye, pinned Joe Rodriguez in :26, and lost 5-3 in overtime to Travis VanOtterloo of HWC in the finals.

MMC's Levi Letsche was third at 285 pounds. He was pinned by Scott Frazier of L-B in :28, received a bye, and pinned Austin Buske of Westwood in 4:37, and pinned Frazier in 2:02 in a re-match.

Other MMC finishes were Etan Radtke fourth at 160, Mitch Brady fifth at 145, Nathan Zubrod fifth at 189, Dylan Rolfes sixth at 135, and Mike Bush sixth at 171.

"i'm very proud of these guys as we start the second half of our season," said MMC coach Steve Phillips. "They all wrestled very hard today. Huge improvements have been made by many and they are all working extremely hard."

For Cherokee, Anderson won his title by pinning all three foes, including a fall overChris VanderWeerd of HWC in 4:27, a :30 fall over Levi Mahrt of K-P. and a 5:56 fall over Alta's Cody Duhn in the finals.

Loughlin beat Todd Bottorff of K-P 9-6, and pinned Kyle Westra of HWC in 5:54 for his title.

Weaver placed third after losing 10-4 to Chad Richardson of L-B, pinning Chris Schroeder of Westwood in :26, and pinning Stetson Nelson of K-P in :45.

Letsche was third after losing by fall in 4:51 to Dustin Scott of Westwood, beating Rolfes of MMC 9-8, and pinning Zach Rathman of L-B in 4:56.

Devitt was third after losing by fall in 3:43 to Van Otterloo of HWC, and pinning Joe Rodriguez of Alta in 1:25.

Other place finishers for the Braves were Manny Bustos fourth at 171, Alex Peck fifth at 152, and Miah Back fifth at 285.

"It was a good day for us," said Cherokee coach Jason Wood. "What a crazy week! We only had two practices and took just seven wrestlers to K-P, and all seven placed and we had two champs."

The mat Braves wrestle at Holstein Thursday night in a non-conference double dual with Aurelia/Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland, and MMC.
