NEWELL - Aurelia Bulldog basketball coach Grant Peckenschneider said his team "came out of the gates and played pretty well" in their Monday night Northwest Conference hoops match with the host Newell-Fonda Mustangs. "We did not play very good defense, though," said Peck, "as we let them get into the lane too easily most of the night. They pulled away at the end of the second quarter and (continued) into the second half." The final score read Newell-Fonda 71, Aurelia 44.
Freshman Austin Glawe had another "double-double" night to lead the Bulldogs, scoring 14 points and wiping the glass for 11 boards. Glawe also blocked two Mustang shot attempts, had three assists and a steal. Senior guard Jacob Howey scored 10 points and had five steals for the Bulldogs and Nick Hirschman added seven points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Newell-Fonda (4-8) had three players score in double figures - Cody Wells, with 16 points, Conner Juilfs with 13, and Brad Bohe with 12.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to host Whiting Tuesday in a non-conference make-up game matching two 0-9 teams. Aurelia is also scheduled to host River Valley on Thursday in another non-conference game before returning to Nothwest Conference play at Sioux Central on Friday.
