EMMETSBURG - The 8-2 Cherokee Braves jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first quarter and led at all the breaks to claim a 52-40 Lakes Conference victory over Emmetsburg here Tuesday night.
The Braves led 28-17 at halftime, and 39-28 after three frames, before salting away the win.
Seth Mahnke paced Cherokee's scoring with 15 points, while Brock Dagel added 14, and Kyle Schuck and Cody Ege seven apiece. Ryan Kliegl led the E-Hawks in scoring with 13 points.
Schuck led the Braves to an advantage on the boards with 10 rebounds, followed by Ege with nine, and Dagel and Mahnke five each. Ege also led in assists with six, and Mahnke tallied four. Ege had three steals in the game, and Dagel blocked two shots.
Cherokee netted 21-47 field goals for a warm 45 percent, and converted 6-16 free throws. Emmetsburg was 13-25 from the field for 37 percent, and made 11-16 free throws.
"This was a real good conference road win," said Cherokee coach Bob Lee. "Our defense came out very sharp in the first half and forced them into a lot of tough shots and turnovers.
"Our guys are starting to take a lot of pride in our defense and it is fun to watch them work on the defensive end of the court."
The Braves host Storm Lake Friday night and travel to South O'Brien Saturday night.
