Deane was born July 31, 1926, the youngest of five children born to Arthur and Winifred Onnen, and grew up in Rockwell City. He was drafted into the service during WWII, when he was a senior in high school. He served in the Army Air Corps at Okinawa, and returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Colleen, who remained by his side for 63 years.
Deane was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Colleen, of Mesa, Arizona; a son, Travis D. (Susan) Onnen of Jackson, Michigan; two daughters, Claudia Ryner of North Liberty and Laurie (Curt) Jensen of Adrian, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends.
Those left to remember Deane have many wonderful memories. He loved to play bridge and the peg game, as well as enjoying camping and traveling. He was the town Santa Claus for many years and thoroughly enjoyed that experience. He had a great sense of humor and was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered as a kind and loving man, and will be missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service was held on January 30, 2010, and burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Rockwell City.
