AURELIA - The Aurelia girls hosted a jv-varsity basketball doubleheader with Remsen-Union here on Tuesday night.
In the opener, the R-U JV scored a 30-17 win over the young Bulldog girls. Aurelia Coach Aaron Ware said, "Our junior varsity is a young group and have only played a few games. They played hard and were able to overcome some early turnovers to
get closer to Remsen Union. Boxing out by the girls has improved as a team. Remsen's girls had some really good shooting."
Amber Loucks had four points and three rebounds and junior Meghan Glawe, a varsity mainstay, helped out with five points.
In the varsity game, said Coach Ware, "We had a very shaky first quarter to start the game. We took a lot of shots and had several good looks at the basket, but hurried our
ability to establish a sound offensive rhythm. We switched defense against a fairly young team by putting on some man-to-man pressure in the second quarter. Toward the end of the game, we final settled into the offense we wanted, got a lot of nice shots, and moved the ball extremely well against Remsen's zone defense."
Aurelia wound up winning the non-conference match-up, 45-35. Shaina Thevenin scored 14 points to pace the Bulldogs, and Meghan Glawe recorded her eighth double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Erin Laursen scored nine points and pulled down nine boards, and sisters Gracie and Audrey Winterhof forced a combined 16 turnovers on defense.
"I am glad how we were able to play a controlled game with a strong defensive showing. concluded Coach Ware.
The Bulldog teams play at Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn tonight before wrapping up the regular season at home Friday night against Newell-Fonda in Northwest Conference play.
