Cherokee unanimous First Place choice in competitive 2A District

SIOUX CITY - The Cherokee Washington High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Paul McEntaffer, recently performed at the Northwest Iowa District Jazz Festival here, and earned a unanimous First -Place from the judges, automatically qualifying them for a spot in the 2010 Class 2A Iowa Jazz Championships in April.

The top two bands in each class earn an automatic berth to the Iowa State Jazz Band Championships.

Among the traditional acclaimed bands Cherokee competed against at the District Festival were South O'Brien , which placed second at last year's Iowa Jazz Championships; Okoboji, which placed fourth at last year' s IJC; Rock Valley, which was in Class 1A last year and placed third in the 1A AIJC.

Cherokee's Jacob Lewis, Abby Hayes, Paige Stieneke, and Liz Ross were all named Outstanding Soloists at the District competition, and the saxophone, trumpet and trombone sections were also honored with Outstanding Musicianship awards.

The 2010 Iowa Jazz Championships will be held in Des Moines on Tuesday, April 13.
