Gary K. Smith, 67, formerly of Cherokee, passed away Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at his home in Paso Robles, Calif. following a lengthy illness.
It was Gary's wish to be cremated, and memorial services will be held at a later date. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee is handling local arrangements.
Gary was born on July 15, 1942 at Cherokee, to Lewis and Muriel (Sutton) Smith. He graduated from Cherokee Washington High School in 1960 and then graduated from Buena Vista College with a teaching degree. He taught school at CAL Community in Hampton for a few years, and also worked as a waiter at Speelmon's Steak House in Cherokee for several years. Gary was a resident of California the past 10 years, and before that lived in New Jersey for a few years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Smith; and an infant sister, Sandra Kay Smith.
He is survived by one brother, Dean Smith and his wife Janet of Cherokee; two nieces; one nephew; several cousins; and a special friend, Art Stickney, of Paso Robles, Calif.
