Mat Braves qualify 2 for Districts

Champion Loughlin, runner-up Letsche advance

SHELDON - The Cherokee Braves placed two wrestlers into the Class 2A Districts in Cherokee during Sectional action in Sheldon Saturday. The 2A Districts are in Cherokee Saturday starting at 11 a.m.

For the Braves, Patrick Loughlin won the title at 171 pounds after pinning Tim Jenness of Sheldon/South O'Brien in 1:52, and then beating Drew Rupp of MOC-Floyd Valley 4-3.

Cherokee's Jack Letsche was runner-up at 135 pounds to qualify for Districts. Letsche beat Adam Vogel of MOC-FV 7-5 in overtime, and then was pinned by Spencer Tischer of S-SOS in 1:34 in the finals.

Cherokee's Zach Anderson just missed out on a District berth, finishing third at 145. Anderson beat Chris VandeWeerd of Hull Western Christian 8-2, beat Chris Hubers of MOC-FV 3-2, lost by fall in 4:28 to Dallas Rozeboom of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, and lost 17-2 to John Estep of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock.

Also for the Braves, Dave Lobato was fourth at 119, and Miah Back fourth at 285. Rick Weaver was fifth at 130, Gabe Conley fifth at 152, Tyler McLaughlin sixth at 160, Manny Bustos sixth at 189, and Trevor Devitt sixth at 215.

"Sectionals, the first step on the road to the State Tournament, is always a day of emotions," said Cherokee coach Jason Wood. "All our wrestlers fought hard and we are proud of all of them."

S-SOS won the team title with 237.5 points, followed by BH/RV 191.5, CL/GLR 172, MOC-FV 122.5, HWC 110, and Cherokee 89.
