KINGSLEY - The improved River Valley girls basketball team broke away from a 30-20 halftime lead on the way to a resounding 61-37 victory over Kingsley-Pierson in Class 1A Regional Tournament action here Thursday night.
The visiting Wolverines clung to a tight 12-10 lead after the first quarter, but erupted with an 18-10 scoring run in the second quarter to take the halftime lead.
Brittany Hunwardson led River Valley with 14 points, Lexie Chester added 12, and Kasi Byers tallied 10.
Kari Ludvigson led the Wolverines in assists with seven, and Sarah Byers and Ludvigson paced RV on the boards with seven rebounds apiece.
"We are finally starting to play our best basketball," said River Valley coach Matt Jenness. "We are getting after people defensively and using our defense to create offense. We need to take care of the ball a little bit better, but we are almost there."
The Wolverines travel to Alta for second-round tournament action Tuesday night. The Cyclones beat Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn 49-44 Thursday night in Alta to advance to the second round.
