Area wrestlers earn State berths

MMC, AGHSC, WHS, S-SOS grapplers advance

In District action Saturday, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and Aurelia/Galva-Holstein/Schaller Crestland each qualified two wrestlers, and the Cherokee Washington High Braves one for the Iowa State Tournament beginning today in Des Moines.

Of that fivesome, two were District champions, and three were runners-up in their respective Districts.

The Class 2A District in Cherokee featured the AGHSC and Cherokee teams, while MMC battled in the Class 1A District in Sioux Center.

AGHSC's Taylor Witzel won the 160-pound title in Cherokee Saturday, defeating Tanner Mathews of Sheldon/ South O'Brien by the score of 5-3, and then pinning Tyler Down of Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove in 5:59 to win the district title and improve to 42-5 in his senior season.

MMC's Russ Godbersen, rated #3 at 152 pounds in Class 1A, won his weight class after pinning Gabe Doornink of Sioux Center in 3:00, and pinning Brett Flynn of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in 2:13. Flynn is ranked #10.

Jacob Pearson of MMC was runner-up Saturday to make state at 160 pounds. He pinned Ron Singleton of Lawton-Bronson in :40. and then lost to 10th-ranked and eventual champion Zach Jones of Okoboji 8-6 in a thrilling match.

In 2A Cherokee's Patrick Loughlin was runner-up at 171 to earn his first State Tournament berth. The senior beat Shelby Henningsen of Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove 6-2, lost 5-1 to eventual champ Ryan Rozeboom of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, and then pinned Drew Rupp of MOC-Floyd Valley in the third period to make State.

AGHSC's Logan Shaefer pinned Trevor Van Den Top of Hull Western Christian in 1:39, and then was defeated by Joe Feekes of Sheldon/South O'Brien by the score of 3-2 to place second. He heads to state with a 38-10 record in his sophomore season.

The third AGHSC wrestler to compete at District was freshman Michael Davidson at 215 pounds. He was pinned by Pete Mathews of Sheldon/South O'Brien in :53 and then defeated Alen Sites CL/GLR by fall in 3:20 to get the chance to wrestle back against Travis Delance of Rockwell City-Lytton/Southern Cal for a right to go to state. Davidson lost by fall in 5:29 to place third.

Cherokee's Jack Letsche also finished third at Districts at 135 pounds. He lost 16-12 to Josh Schaefer of OA-BCIG in an exciting match, and lost by decision (no score submitted) to Cody Fox of Carroll .

Also for MMC in Class 1A, Tyler Pearson placed third at Districts at 135 pounds. He lost 9-5 to Josh Taylor of Akron-Westfield, beat Trent Lundgren of Graettinger-Terril 17-2, but had no wrestle-back opportunity.

Sheldon-South O'Brien sends four wrestlers to State out of the Cherokee 2A District - Spencer Tischer, runner-up at 135; Bruce McWilliams, runner-up at 189; Pete Matthews, champion at 215; and Joe Feekes, champion at 285.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton won the Cherokee District team title with 118 points, followed by OA-BCIG 105, S-SOS 88, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 59, Rockwell City-Lytton/Southern Cal 59, AGHSC 42, Carroll 20, Hull Western Christian 20, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock 18, Cherokee 14, MOC-Floyd Valley 9.

HMS won the 1A District at Sioux Center with 104 points, followed by Woodbury Central 83, Okoboji 75, G-T 66, MMC 43.5, Sioux Center 32, L-B 29, West Lyon 26, West Sioux 24, Alta 24, A-W 20, K-P 20, Sibley-Ocheyedan 17.5, Hinton 10.

The State Meet is today through Saturday at the Wells Fargo Arena in des Moines.
