DES MOINES - First-round opponents await nine area wrestlers who qualified at Saturday's Class 1A (Sioux Center) and 2A (Cherokee) Districts for the Iowa State Wrestling Championships beginning today in Des Moines.
Cherokee's Patruck Loughlin was District runner-up at 171 pounds and will meet Kane Seeley of Perry in 2A action. Loughlin is a senior with a 27-10 record this season, and Seeley is a sophomore with a 33-4 record.
Also in 2A, Taylor Witzel of AGHSC was District champion at 160 and will meet Kyle Walker of Algona-North Kossuth. Witzel is a senior with a 42-5 record this season, and Walker is a senior with a 35-6 mark.
AGHSC's Logan Schaefer was District runner-up and will meet Bret Johnson of Roland-Story City at 285. Schaefer is a sophomore with a 38-10 record, and Johnson a junior with a 34-0 mark.
In 1A, MMC's Russ Godbersen was District champion at 152 and will meet Jon Elmore of Prairie Valley-Gowrie. Godbersen is a senior with a 41-4 record, and Elmore a senior with a 32-6 mark.
Also for MMC, Jacob Pearson was runner-up at 160 and will meet Randy Armstrong of Eddyville-Blakesburg. Pearson is a sophomore with a 33-12 mark, and Armstrong a senior with a 36-13 record.
For Sheldon-South O'Brien, Spencer Tischer was runner-up at 135 in 2A at Cherokee and meets Kyler Risher of Centerville. Tischer is a junior with a 22-5 record, and Risher a junior with a 39-10 mark.
Bruce McWilliams was runner-up at 189 and meets Blaize Cabell of Independence. McWilliams is a sophomore with a 35-5 mark, and Cabell a junior with a 41-1 record.
Pete Matthews won the 215 class at Cherokee and meets Troy Brown of carlisle. Matthews is a senior with a 33-5 record, and Brown a junior with a 27-9 mark.
Joe Feekes of S-SOS won the 285 title and meets Jordan Harestad of Gilbert. Feekes is a senior with a 34-11 mark, and Harestad a senior with a 40-6 record.
