MARCUS - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boys raced away to a 29-15 halftime lead on the way to a decisive 62-32 victory over Granville Spalding in Class 1A District basketball action here Tuesday night.
The Eagles placed four players in double figures and were led by Neal Bunt with 14 points, Will Hansen 12, John Hoefling 11, and Zach Specht 10.
Brian Hansen and Colby Murphy led Spalding with 13 points apiece.
MMC sank 25-53 field goals for 47 percent, including 6-15 three-pointers, and drained 6-9 free throws. Spalding hit 12-30 shots for 30 percent, including 1-13 threeballs, and was 7-8 from the foul line.
The Eagles jumped to a 16-8 lead in the first quarter, and hel a 46-21 bulge heading into the final eight minutes.
"The boys got after it defensively tonight," said MMC coach Pat Bird. "neal Bunt, Zach Specht, and Will Hansen had 14 steals all together. I was also pleased we had 10 players in the scoring column.
MMC has a tough task in Thursday's District semifinals, traveling to Hull to take on the rated 17-4 Boyden-Hull team at 7 p.m.
