A few years ago I started a program at the Cherokee Public Library called Reader's Choice. It is still ongoing but I have not done well at promoting it lately so I think it is time to rework it and give it a boost.
Reader's Choice involves sponsoring a favorite author and agreeing to pay for new titles by that author. We actually buy the book through our normal sources and extend the discounted price to the patron who is generous enough to purchase it for us. Handling it that way gives us access to all the cataloging records and processing tools we need.
Sponsoring an author guarantees the donor will be the first one to read the book regardless of how many reserves are on it. We place a brightly colored plaque inside the cover noting the gift. Currently we have sponsors for James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Janet Evanovich and Michael Connelly among others.
In the next week or so I will be contacting all of the people who are on my list as sponsors to make sure they are willing to continue. In at least two cases the author that was chosen in no longer alive or has stopped writing so a new choice may have to be made. Personally, I sponsor Susan Wilson who will have a new book in March after a two-year hiatus so I know how slowly things can go.
Anyone who is interested in being part of this program can contact me at 225-3498. It really helps stretch our book budget out. It is also possible to sponsor an audio or large print version if someone would prefer that format. We really appreciate our Reader's Choice members.
Come join us at our weekly book discussion group. READit meets at 10am on Thursdays. It's an hour and half of book sharing and lively discussion so bring the book you're currently reading, library copy or not, and enjoy coffee, cookies and conversation. You'll go home with a great reading list and be the first to know what new books are coming in at the library.
The library is open Monday, Wednesday & Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weather closings are announced on KCHE.
