Area wrestlers compete at State

S-SOS's Matthews leads area contingent

DES MOINES - A pair of Sheldon-South O'Brien wrestlers in Class 2A were still alive Thursday afternoon at the Iowa State Wrestling Championships here.

For S-SOS, Pete Matthews was the lone winner in his opening match of the 10 area wrestlers comprising the Chronicle Times coverage area. However, Matthews lost in the 2A quarterfinals Thursday afternoon and wrestled in the second-round consolation bracket late Thursday.

Matthews, a senior, ran his record to 34-5 at 215 pounds after beating junior Troy Brown of Carlisle 14-6 in his opening match Wednesday. Brown is a junior with a 27-9 record entering his match with Matthews.

Matthews then lost by fall Thursday in 4:53 to senior Ryan Frank of Independence. Matthews is 34-6 and Frank 42-2.

Also for S-SOS, sophomore Bruce McWilliams lost 14-4 to junior Blaize Cabell of Independence in his opener, and then pinned senior Jacob Hartwig of Monticello in 5:41 in first-round consolation action Wednesday afternoon. McWilliams boasts a 36-6 record, Cabell is 42-1, and Hartwig ends his season at 31-19.

Five other area wrestlers in 2A, including Cherokee's Patrick Loughlin at 171, lost their first two matches and bowed out of the State meet.

Loughlin, a senior, lost 10-6 to sophomore Kane Seeley of Perry in his opener, and then lost 7-1 to Clear Lake senior Levi Kellog in first-round consolation. Loughlin ends his season with a 27-12 record, Seeley is 34-4, and Kellog 28-16.

Two Aurelia/Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland grapplers dropped their first two matches to end their seasons.

Taylor Witzel, a senior, lost a tight match 5-3 in overtime to junior Kyle Walker of Algona-North Sentral Kossuth at 160 pounds in his opener, and then dropped a 12-2 decision to senior Will Hansen of Colgate in first-round consolation. Witzel ends with a 42-7 record, Walker is 36-6, and Hansen is 34-3.

AGHSC sophomore Logan Schaefer was pinned by junior Bret Johnson of Roland-Story in 1:27 in his opener at 285 pounds, and was then pinned in 1:16 by senior Cameron Hayward of Independence in first-round consolation. Schaefer ends with a 38-12 record, Johnson is 35-0, and Hayward 30-8.

Two other S-SOS wrestlers lost their first two matches to also end their seasons.

Spencer Tischer, a junior, was pinned in 1:46 at 135 pounds by junior Kyler Risher of Centerville in his opener, and then was pinned in :50 by senior Trevor Hejhal of Osage in first-round consolation. Tischer ends with a 22-7 record, Risher is 40-11, and Hejhal 38-3.

Joe Feekes of S-SOS, a senior, lost 6-2 to senior Jordan Harestad of Gilbert

in his opener, and then lost 8-0 to junior Zach Bauer of Dallas Center-Grimes in first-round consolation. Feekes ends with a 34-13 record, Harestad is 41-6, and Bauer 37-4.

The Class 2A semifinals and third-round consolation matches are today from 1-2:15 p.m., and the consolation semifinals are from 7:45-9:15 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Arena here.

The all-class consolation finals are Saturday from noon to 2:30 p.m., and the Grand March and finals begin at 6 p.m. Saturday.
