2 MMC grapplers vie at State 1A

Godbersen stays alive with consolation win

DES MOINES - Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn's Russ Godbersen split his first two matches to stay alive for a medal and a shot at third place at the Class 1A Iowa State Wrestling Championships here Thursday.

His teammate, Jacob Pearson, lost his first two matches to end his season.

Godbersen, an Eagle senior, lost a narrow 3-1 decision to senior Jon Elmore of Prairie Valley-Gowrie in his opening match at 152 pounds, and then came back in the first-round consolation with a hard-earned 4-2 decision over senior Josh Becker of Gilbertville Don Bosco Thursday afternoon. Godbersen is now 42-5 this season, Elmore is 33-6, and Becker 27-14.

Pearson, am MMC sophomore, was pinned by senior Randy Armstrong of Eddyville-Blairsburg in 5:14 in his opener, and then lost 12-6 to senior Taylor Connolly of East Buchanan in first-round consolation. Pearson ends with a 33-14 record, Armstrong is 37-13, and Connolly 33-12.
