HULL - The rated 18-4 Boyden-Hull Comets hammered Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn's boys in second-round Class 1A District Tournament action here last week, claiming an 84-43 victory after racing out to a 42-20 halftime lead.
Will Hansen led the MMC Eagles with 12 points, while John Hoefling added nine, and Tyrel Godbersen eight. Hansen also led his team on the boards with six rebounds.
Josh Vander Maten paced the winning Comets with 26 points, followed by Jordan Mouw 21, and Adam Schafer 13.
MMC sank just 15-52 field goals for a chilly 29 percent, including 3-23 three-point attempts. The Eagles made 10-16 free throws.
Boyden-Hull netted 32-59 shots for s sizzling 54 percent, and was 3-12 from the three-point line. The winners cashed in 17-23 free throws.
"Their hands-on, in your face man-to-man defense kept us from ever getting into the flow of things on offense," said MMC coach Pat Bird. "They have several wide bodies on their team and that enabled them to out-rebound us by a 2-1 margin.
"Our guts kept battling away to the very end, but Boyden-Hull simply had too much fire power for us. Will Hansen had a nice game for us to finish out his senior season."
MMC ends the year with a 5-17 record.
