Springer's head to Minnesota

JACKSON, MN-Three teams represented the Springer's Gymnastics program at the "Aloha Tournament" in Jackson on Sunday, January 24. The three teams, from the Springer's program in Storm Lake, competed amongst a field of 13 teams during the meet. There were 6 teams in the upper division where the Springer's Blue and Springer's Pink teams competed and 7 more in the lower division where the Springer's program was represented by the Black team. Since awards were handed out in different areas for the two divisions, the following results are for the upper division only.

Team medals were only awarded to the top 2 teams in each division and the Springer's Blue team finished 3rd on the day with a team total of 122.15, behind 1st place finisher Triple Crown-Diamonds at 136.85 and 2nd place Triple Crown-Sapphires at 129. In the 4th place position was the Junior Huskies-Achievers team with 118.7 for the day and then the Martin County West-Shooting Stars in 5th with 118 pts. Finally, the Springer's Pink team finished in 6th in the upper division with a team total of 103 pts.

Springer's was the only program to have any novice competitors in the upper division and of those five athletes, four are locals: Kylie Mongan and Megan Brown of Cherokee, and Rowan Kolpin and Annika Patton of Aurelia. Kylie, Annika and Rowan compete on the Blue team and Megan competes for the Pink team. The fifth competitor in this age group is Alicia Turnquist of Alta, representing Springer's Pink. On the vault event Annika placed 4th with a score of 7.1, while Rowan was 3rd with a 7.3, Megan was 2nd with a 7.6 and Kylie was 1st with a 7.9 score. On the uneven bars it was Megan in 4th with a 5.4, Annika in 3rd with a 5.7, Rowan in 2nd with a 6.7 and Kylie edged her out for 1st with a 6.8 score on the bars. On the beam event, Megan was 5th place for the day with a 4.8, Rowan was 4th with a 5.6, Kylie was 2nd with a 6.3 and Annika took 1st in beam with a 6.5. On the floor it was Rowan in 5th with a score of 5.4, Megan in 4th with a 7.0, Annika in 3rd with a 7.0 and Kylie took 1st on the floor with a 7.3. In the all-around scoring Megan ended up in 4th with a total of 24.8 for the day, then in 3rd was Rowan at 25, Annika in 2nd with 26.3 and Kylie took 1st with a total of 28.3 for the meet.

In the Children category there were 3 Springer's athletes in the upper division, including Tiernan Kolpin of Aurelia. On the vault she took 4th with a score of 7.6, on bars she placed 4th with a 5.6 score, on beam she was 5th with a 6.7 and on floor she was 2nd with her 6.9. In the all-around total for the day she ended up 2nd in her age group with a total for the day of 26.8. (the girl that beat her was at 27.2)

In the junior category, which is filled with Springer's gymnasts, local athlete Brielle Kolpin did very well amongst a VERY tough field of competitors. On the vault event she placed 8th place with a score of 8.1, while on bars she was 4th with a 7.5. On beam, a very strong event for her, she was 2nd with her 8.5 score. Finally, in the all-around scoring for the day she finished in 4th place with a 31.4 total for the day.
