2010-11 volleyball, softball, XC teams to remain independent

AURELIA - The Aurelia School Board met in special session on Friday evening to discuss the recommendations from the students, Athletic Directors, and Board Sharing Committee members from the Aurelia and Alta School Districts regarding proposed school colors and an athletic team nickname for the shared Alta-Aurelia District for the 2010-11 school year.

Aurelia Board members Brad Rohwer and Paul Pingel were the Aurelia Board's representatives in the process, and they presented their report to the Aurelia Board and Administration at the Friday meeting. Aurelia Athletic Director Grant Peckenschneider was also present at the meeting and shared his feelings and those of Alta AD Terri Zimmerman with the Board.

Students in both districts had been asked to vote on proposed nicknames, and the student vote reportedly overwhelmingly favored the nickname "Warriors," which was the team nickname during the previous Alta-Aurelia athletic sharing agreement (1989-1996). The Board unanimously approved of that choice.

On the matter of school colors, a compromise of current school colors was the recommendation, and the Board approved navy and red uniforms, with a white accent, after Peckenscheider displayed a typical uniform with that color scheme.

In regards to a timeline for sharing athletics, it was the recommendation of the Athletic Directors to share the following sports, beginning with the summer of 2010: High School baseball; High School and Middle School football; Middle School volleyball; High School and Middle School basketball; High School and Middle School wrestling; High School and Middle School track and field, and golf.

The only sports which won't be shared until the Districts go into their complete whole-grade sharing agreement in the 2011-2012 school year are High School volleyball, softball, and cross-country, and the reason in all cases is a matter of numbers.

Both districts will have a large turnout of girls for volleyball next year, as well as for softball this summer, so each school will be able to field a competitive team in both of those sports. Cross country, on the other hand, will have a very low turnout in Aurelia, and Peckenschneider said he didn't feel it would be fair to the Alta District to share cross country, as it would put the team into a higher class.

All sports, as well as classes, will be shared beginning the following year.

Here is an example of what the Alta-Aurelia football jerseys will look like. Navy helmets and pants are also being considered.
In other sharing business, it was decided that track meets will be held in Alta, as they have a hard surface track; Homecoming activities (parade, pep rally) this coming fall will be held in Alta, but each district will have their own Homecoming Courts, and do Homecoming activities throughout the week in their own Districts; the shared football team will have a five-man coaching staff; the Districts should have a shared Superintendent of Schools, though they may not be able to accomplish that for the 2010-11 School year, and the Boards of both Districts should be involved in the hiring for that shared position.

The Aurelia Board also felt there was no immediate need to share transportation directors or business managers. The business managers in both districts use the same software and communicate well and often with each other.

The two-member Board committees will meet again in March, with one new Board member from each District and one returning member, with more committee recommendations likely forthcoming at the March Board meetings of both Districts.
