I am ready to write about how the snow is melting and spring is in the air but I'm afraid that might jinx the weather. I think all of us are tired of a long white winter. But at least it's March and despite what the weatherman may throw at us, the wait for green grass doesn't seem quite as long.
At the Cherokee Public Library we are anticipating spring and doing some cleaning and rearranging. We have a community service volunteer who is dusting all of our shelves. It will be a job well done, one of those things we only get to when we have time.
Another project in the works is downsizing our reference section. We used to need lots of print sources to answer questions but in the last ten years the Internet has taken over that responsibility. For example, medical information changes so quickly that many times a book less than a year old is already outdated. Instead we depend on Health Info Iowa and other reliable websites. So we have sorted through many heavy tomes and reshelved or recycled them.
In the process of doing so we have moved the retained reference books to the shelving unit that held new books and moved the new books to the north wall where reference items formerly were. It allows us more space to spread out and display new titles and spruces up the whole area. We have had many compliments already as it puts all of the new books on eye level.
Our next project will involve DVDs. Thanks to Friends of the Library we have two new racks coming in soon. So we will be doing some more rearranging as we discard some VHS movies and spread our collection of DVDs into a friendlier format. It will also allow us to expand sections of musicals and classics among others.
Another area in the library seeing some attention will be the magazines. Again, thanks to Friends of the Library, we will be replacing the ten year old plastic covers that are taped and tattered with fresh ones. I am always amazed at how much our magazines are read and how many people spend time in that part of the library. I'm sure the face lift will be appreciated.
Library open hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday and Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop in and take a look at what we have to offer.
