Mark Brighton graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Westmar College in 1987 with a double major in physical education and elementary education. He completed his Masters Degree in educational administration from Drake University in 1995.
He started teaching at Meriden-Cleghorn in the fall of 1987 in the areas of physical education and TAG.
During the 1987-88 school year, he coached junior high volleyball, junior high girls basketball, junior high boys basketball, and junior high girls and boys track.
In the fall of 1988, Marcus and Meriden-Cleghorn entered into a whole grade sharing agreement, which reduced his coaching load to junior high football, junior high boys basketball, and junior high boys track.
In the fall of 1992, Mark traded his TAG duties for the middle school athletic director duties. For 10 years, from 1990-99, he was Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn's head softball coach, earning 1A District Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1997.
Mark says, "Having great secretaries and custodians has made this award possible. Without those people, along with teachers and community volunteers willing to be line judges, bookkeepers, scoreboard keepers, chain crews, track meet workers, and concessionaires, the athletic director and the school programs would fail to meet the expectations we have for our students' school activities."
In addition to his school duties, Mark has just finished his 28th year of refereeing high school basketball, as well as officiating in 9 state volleyball tournaments and 7 state softball tournaments.
The MMC Booster Club president LuAnn Kunzweiler says, "Mark is a highly organized self-starter who invariably understands exactly what a project is about. He consistently produces high quality work in a timely fashion."
Mark and his wife, Amy, have two children, Laura, 10, and Kyle, 8.
