Important meeting in Marcus Monday

Thursday, March 11, 2010

The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn school board encourages the residents of the school district to attend Monday night's meeting, March 15, at 7 p.m. at the high school. The Board and administration would like the public to see first hand how the budget is stacking up, based on projected student numbers and expenses, would like input from the community on what they perceive to be the priorities of the district.

Supt. Jan Brandhorst will walk the public through the numbers with graphics, and explain state requirements for fulfilling curriculm mandates.

Since Brandhorst has been the Superintendent, the district has reduced spending by around $900,000 and there isn't a lot of leeway to cut much more out of the curriculm/staff. The board has also thought of closing the Cleghorn building, but space in Marcus would be limited. Also the certified staff has asked for a package which would consist of a 7.5 percent increase.

The board is also considering raising taxes and sharing personnel with neighboring districts. The board is hoping for a good crowd, as what the board decides will be influenced by input from the public.
