Helen Mathis, 91, of Aurelia, passed away Thursday, March 18, at Cherokee Villa Nursing & Rehab Center.
Helen was born March 28, 1918 in Silver Township, Cherokee Co. to Rudolph and May (Munz) Bergert. She attended school in Quimby and Cherokee graduating in 1936 from Wilson High School. She was married to Paul Mathis on Sept. 16, 1937 at Spencer. The couple farmed in Pilot Township for many years. She was a volunteer at the Cherokee Villa. Helen had lived in Aurelia since 1966. She enjoyed spending time with her family and gambling at the boat.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Paul Mathis on Oct. 18, 1999, a son and daughter-in-law Doug and Bobbi Mathis, a sister Hilda Walden and brothers William, John and Harry Bergert.
She is survived by one son: Roger Mathis and his wife Joan of Loveland, Colo.; 13 grandchildren: Debbie McGuire of S.C.; Sheri Hudson of Coco Beach, Fla.; Mike Mathis of Wis.; Beth Bresson of Independence; Teresa Norland of Cherokee; Jonathan Mathis of Lawton; Jason Mathis of Cherokee; Kareena (Michael) Tomky of Mead, Colo.; Kasonda (Mitchell) Drefke of Cherokee; Justin Mathis of Longmont, Colo.; Kristeena Mathis of Las Vegas, Nev.; Jodi Mathis of Loveland, Colo.; Andrew Mathis of Loveland, Colo.; 18 great grandchildren: Kasondra, Kyle and Emily Norland; Justine Mathis and Andrea Rhea; Josh Mathis and Amanda Green; Mariah, Mikaela, Blake and Thadeus Booth; Tyler and Ashley Mathis; Jacob and Shelby Mathis; Sylvianne and Jasmine Rivera; Kathrine Bresson; one great great-granddaughter Emma Green.
