Frances L. Bruning, 84, of Quimby, Iowa passed away Wednesday evening, March 24, 2010 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 29, at 10:30 a.m. at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby. Pastor Don Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the Church on Monday. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com.

Frances was born January 10, 1926 in Silver Township, Cherokee County, Iowa to Joseph C. and Hulda (Petterson) Kastengren. She attended country school. She was married to Freeman Bruning on Feb. 17, 1953 in Cherokee. They made their home in Quimby. Freeman passed away on Jan. 4, 1993 shortly before their 40th anniversary.

Frances worked as a nurse's aide at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital before her marriage to Freeman and from 1961 until her retirement in 1980. Frances was devoted to her family. She was a talented craftsperson who embroidered and crocheted. Frances was noted by her family for cooking and baking, especially fried chicken, Swedish brown beans, and chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed watching TV, especially her soap operas, and reading. Frances always had a flower bed of petunias in her yard. Frances was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby. She lived in Quimby almost 60 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Freeman, brothers Joe Jr., Johnny, and Leonard; brothers-in-law Olle Bengtsson and Garland Bruning, sisters-in-law Margaret Kastengren and Doris Dunn, and a daughter-in-law Sheila Vesgaard.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Larry Vesgaard of Fort Collins, Colorado; Denny Vesgaard of Aurelia; Steve Bruning of Ida Grove; Randy Bruning of Quimby; Linda (Steve) Sones of Quimby; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Michael) Beazley, Chris Bruning, Becky Bruning, Jeremy (Jessica) Bruning, Robert Vesgaard, Matthew (Heather) Vesgaard, and Christi Vesgaard; great-grandchildren Ethan, Madison, Jenna, Jakob, Spencer, Cameron and Brandon; brother Nels Kastengren of Sutherland; sisters Marian (Brad) Tate of Bayard, Iowa and Shirley Bengtsson of Longmont, Colorado; sisters-in-law Isabel Kastengren of Cherokee; Joyce Kastengren of Aurelia and Lois Curtis of Sioux City.
